Instructor Information
Instructor Greeting
Welcome to MUSC 1030: American Popular Music. My name is Dr. Ross Hagen and I am a lecturer in music history at UVU. Popular music studies is one of my specialties and I’m quite excited to explore this material with you.
Educational Background
Dr. Ross Hagen received his B.A. in Music at Davidson College, N.C. in 2001, and his Masters (2005) and Ph.D. (2010) degrees in Musicology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Hagen’s research interests include music and ritualism, music fan cultures, underground music scenes, and 20th/21st century avant-garde music. Publications include chapters in the edited collections Metal Rules the Globe (Duke University Press, 2012), Hardcore, Punk, and Other Junk (Lexington Books, 2014) and The Ashgate Research Companion to Fan Cultures (Ashgate, 2014). Hagen has also presented papers at national conferences for the Society for Ethnomusicology, the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and the Popular Culture Association. In addition to his academic work, Hagen has composed music and sound cues for several UVU theatrical productions and has released around a dozen albums on various independent record labels. Hagen is a pretty good bassist, a decent guitarist, and a recovering oboist.
Contact Procedures
The best way to contact me is through Canvas’s email system.

Do make sure that your computer is charged and functional before attempting timed assignments! If you have on-going problems with your computer or Internet connection, it is up to you to locate public computer terminals or find another computer on which to complete your work.
Other problems: If you have issues or problems with the course, please contact me over CANVAS email so a solution can be worked out.
Virtual / Real Office Hours
If you need assistance, I will be in my office (GT421) from 10-11 on Wednesdays holding both Real and Virtual Office Hours. For much of June I will not be on campus (I am involved in UVU’s study abroad program), so I will need to conduct business exclusively over CANVAS email during that time.Student Responsibilities Statement

In this course, I will respond to student communication within 24 hours. I will submit grades for assignments within 10 days of the assignments’ due dates.
